Lana Del Rey’s Poetry Debut Review
Hi everyone!
“Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass” is the first poetry book by Lana Del Rey, which also includes her typewritten manuscript and original photographs.
As a fan of Lana Del Rey’s songs, I was super excited to read her poetry. It did not disappoint, even though they were not the type of poetry I enjoy the most.
Without further due, let’s dive into it!

SYNOPSIS: “Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is the title poem of the book and the first poem I wrote of many. Some of which came to me in their entirety, which I dictated and then typed out, and some that I worked laboriously picking apart each word to make the perfect poem. They are eclectic and honest and not trying to be anything other than what they are and for that reason I’m proud of them, especially because the spirit in which they were written was very authentic.” – Lana Del Rey
Lana’s breathtaking first book solidifies her further as “the essential writer of her times” (The Atlantic). This beautiful hardcover edition showcases Lana’s typewritten manuscript pages alongside her original photography. The result is an extraordinary poetic landscape that reflects the unguarded spirit of its creator.

The Long
If you know Lana Del Rey as a singer, you might know how beautifully well written her lyrics are. Even though that was my main reason to purchase her first poetry book, knowing that it also included her handwritten drafts and photographs taken by Lana herself really helped me making my last decision.
Even though I’m not fond of her poetry style, I enjoyed most of her poems. They had meaning and reminded me of her lyrics.
However, what I loved the most were all the photos included, especially because they connected me to the poems.
OVERALL, it’s a very artistic book, perfect for everyone who already loves her songs.
And…That’s It
Even though this was not my cup of tea, are you thinking of adding it to your reading list? Are you a fan of Lana Del Rey? Let me know in the comment section down below 🙂

I can see how poetry is a natural step for Lana Del Rey because of her music and lyric writing and her natural creativity is definitely something that flows out of her. I like her songs but I wouldn’t consider myself an avid listener but I am curious about her poems. Thanks for the honest review about it — I appreciate the info!
You should give it a try, it’s a very enjoyable read with artistic and beautiful photographs 🙂
I love your simple and beautiful review of this book! I enjoy poetry books and love that this book is written by a singer, as that often helps shape the flow of poetry into something musical.
