THE SUN AND HER FLOWERS

Hi everyone!

Today we are back with another book review. I’ll be reviewing “The Sun and Her Flowers”, a poetry book written by Rupi Kaur.

This bestseller follows the steps of her previous book “Milk and Honey”, widely known.

I haven’t read poetry for a long time, so it felt good to be back. Without further due, let’s dive into it!

SYNOPSIS: From Rupi Kaur, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of milk and honey, comes her long-awaited second collection of poetry. A vibrant and transcendent journey about growth and healing. Ancestry and honoring one’s roots. Expatriation and rising up to find a home within yourself.

Divided into five chapters and illustrated by Kaur, the sun and her flowers is a journey of wilting, falling, rooting, rising, and blooming. A celebration of love in all its forms.

The Long

when snow falls

i long for grass

when grass grows

i walk all over it

when leaves change color

i beg for flowers

when flowers bloom

i pick them

-unappreciative

Starting with the good, the book comes with beautiful illustrations made by Kaur herself. I loved every single one of them and I felt like they truly matched each poem.

This being said, let’s jump into the negative aspects of “The Sun and Her Flowers”, in my point of view.

I feel that it’s important to say that this is definitely not the style of poetry iI’m fond of. I will always prefer the traditional poetry, which made it difficult for me to like this book in the first place.

Overall, I didn’t feel any special connection with the majority of the poems, even though they cover very impactful topics, such as feminism, body positivity, sexual assault… Most of the poems reminded me of something I’ve read before and I felt that most of them were similar to “Tumblr quotes”.

Don’t get me wrong, some of them were really sweet and beautiful – but nothing more than that. Overall, it was an enjoyable read even though I felt a lack of connection and emotion.

  1. I read this a couple of months back and I totally get what you mean. It’s way different to what I would usually read, but there was so much hype about it so thought I’d give it a go.
