June Reading List

Hi everyone! How was your May?

These past couple weeks were super busy, so I couldn’t read as much as I wanted it. June is going to be less stressful, so I’m planning on reading 4+ books (wish me luck).

I tried to choose books that would give me Summer vibes, and I think I got it. I’m really excited about all my choices, and I can’t wait to finally read them.

Let’s get into it!

“Where the Crawdads Sing” // Delia Owens

“Where the Crawdads Sing” , Delia Owens.

Goodreads Synopsis: For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet fishing village. Kya Clark is barefoot and wild; unfit for polite society. So in late 1969, when the popular Chase Andrews is found dead, locals immediately suspect her.

But Kya is not what they say. A born naturalist with just one day of school, she takes life’s lessons from the land, learning the real ways of the world from the dishonest signals of fireflies. But while she has the skills to live in solitude forever, the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. Drawn to two young men from town, who are each intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world—until the unthinkable happens.

Genre: Fiction; Historical Fiction

Goodreads Rating: 4.46 / 5

I’m reading this one for my UTP Book Club. It’s the first time I’m participating in something like this, so I’m really excited but kinda confused at the same time.

Either ways, I’m looking forward to start reading it, it’ll for sure be a different experience!

“The Sun and Her Flowers” // Rupi Kaur

Photo By: Not So Secret Me

Goodreads Synopsis: Divided into five chapters and illustrated by Kaur, the sun and her flowers is a journey of wilting, falling, rooting, rising, and blooming. A celebration of love in all its forms.

Genre: Poetry

Goodreads Rating: 4,14

this is the recipe of life
said my mother
as she held me in her arms as i wept
think of those flowers you plant
in the garden each year
they will teach you
that people too
must wilt
fall
root
rise
in order to bloom

Yay! Finally a poetry book! It’s been ages since I last read a poetry book, and I’m so excited to go back to it. I read amazing reviews about this one, as well as “Milk and Honey”, also written by Rupi Kaur.

My parents gave it to me as a birthday gift, and I immediately knew I would read it in May. It’s the perfect month, there are flowers everywhere, sun, Spring, birds…love it! <3

I have high hopes for this one, so wish me luck! Have you read something from Rupi Kaur yet?

“Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass” // Lana Del Rey

“Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass”, Lana Del Rey

Goodreads Synopsis: “Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is the title poem of the book and the first poem I wrote of many. Some of which came to me in their entirety, which I dictated and then typed out, and some that I worked laboriously picking apart each word to make the perfect poem. They are eclectic and honest and not trying to be anything other than what they are and for that reason I’m proud of them, especially because the spirit in which they were written was very authentic.” – Lana Del Rey

Genre: Poetry

Goodreads Rating: 3.93 / 5

I’ve always admired Lana Del Rey as a singer, but specially as a songwriter. Her music lyrics are so poetic and amazing (songs like “Love Song” are heaven on earth), so I’m pretty sure I’ll love her poetry book even more.

My expectations are on their highest, to be honest. Can’t wait!

The Merchant of Venice // William Shakespeare

Photo By: Not So Secret Me

Goodreads Synopsis: In this lively comedy of love and money in sixteenth-century Venice, Bassanio wants to impress the wealthy heiress Portia but lacks the necessary funds. He turns to his merchant friend, Antonio, who is forced to borrow from Shylock, a Jewish moneylender. When Antonio’s business falters, repayment becomes impossible–and by the terms of the loan agreement, Shylock is able to demand a pound of Antonio’s flesh. Portia cleverly intervenes, and all ends well (except of course for Shylock).

Genre: Classics; Play; Fiction

Goodreads Rating: 3,80

This will be my second Shakespeare play! My first was Romeo and Juliet, and I confess that I wasn’t into it. I still want to reread it though, I feel like I’ll know how to appreciate it better now.
