5 Ways to Keep Your Bunny Cool During Summer

Hi everyone!

After a long period of time, here is another bunny care post. Summer is here and, as a bunny mom, one of the things that concerns me the most is how I can keep my bunny cool and comfortable during this season.

If it’s hot outside and you don’t know how to help your bunny dealing with the heat, this post is for you!

Fell free to also leave suggestions in the comment section down below!

Note: I’m not a specialist. However, I’m sharing with you what I know from talking to the vets and researching. Hope it helps

Let’s get into it!

WAYS TO PREVENT OVERHEATING

1. PLACE FROZEN WATER BOTTLES NEAR YOUR BUNNY

Probably one of my most used methods during this time. Artic (my bunny) struggles a lot with summer heat, so he loves his frozen water bottle! He is always glued to it and they’re basically best friends!

I believe one or two bottles are enough to help your bunny cool down, but you can always add more.

HOWEVER, if your bunny likes to lay next to it, it’s important to wrap it with a towel or a sock. This prevents your bunny’s skin from being damaged due to excessive cold.

So always keep that in mind, before doing this.

2. MIST YOUR BUNNY’S EARS

It’s a great option to dump your rabbits ears with a wet cloth or a fine mist. Bunnies lose heat through their years so, by doing this, you will speeding up the cooling process.

Remember to only do this if your bunny feels comfortable and always be careful to not soak they ears in the process. 🙂

3. AIR CONDITIONING / OSCILLATING FANS

If you have this possibility, your bunny will thank you, since it’s a very effective method for the hot days. However, don’t have the fan blowing directly on your rabbit, just by his cage or area.

For those who don’t have AC and would like to, you can check this video to help you build an homemade “air conditioning”. I didn’t try it, but I hope it’ll help! 🙂

4. ADD ICE TO YOUR BUNNY’S WATER BOWL

Add one or two ice cubes to your bunny’s water bowl, keeping it cooler for longer throughout the day. It’s also important to make sure your rabbit stays hydrated all day.

Keep in mind that a healthy bunny should drink roughly 50 to 150 milliliters of water per kilogram of body weight per day. So that’s how important water is for them!

5. TRIM AWAY EXCESSIVE FUR

This applies especially for rabbit breeds with long fur, like angoras or lion heads. However, even if you don’t need to trim their fur, it’s always helpful to brush them once or twice per week. This will also prevent your bunny from ingesting too much fur, which can cause digestive problems.

SIGNS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION

It’s also important to know the signs your bunny is overheating, especially during this time of the year.

If your furry friend shows the following symptoms, it indicates an emergency.

  • Hot and red ears
  • Wetness in the nose area
  • Slow movement
  • Fast breathing
  • Lethargy
  • Salivating
  • Seizures / convulsing(worst case scenario)

AND THAT’S IT!

Hope you find this post helpful! It’s so important to be extra careful with our bunnies during Summer and taking these actions to help them deal with the hot weather.

  4. Ooh, such good tips! I have two cats and put their meat in the fridge which seemed to help them. I also hid a treat in an ice cube but they weren’t willing to eat the treat once the ice had melted 🤦‍♀️ Love the idea of a frozen bottle x

    1. The treat idea is actually so good! I’ll try that for my bunny and see how it works 🙂
