June Reading List (+ May Wrap Up)

Hi everybody!

My June reading list is probably way too ambitious. I’m having 4 final exams and 2 orals, so my time to read will not be that much…

Anyway, I like to challenge myself, so here are the 6 books I’ll be reading this month!

Enjoy 🙂

June TBR

Turtles All The Way Down, John Green

Turtles All The Way Down, Jonh Green - June Reading List
“Turtles All The Way Down” (Portuguese Edition)

Goodreads Synopsis: It all begins with a fugitive billionaire and the promise of a cash reward. Turtles All the Way Down is about lifelong friendship, the intimacy of an unexpected reunion, Star Wars fan fiction, and tuatara. But at its heart is Aza Holmes, a young woman navigating daily existence within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts.

Goodreads Rating: 3.96

I’ve had this book on my TBR for the longest time, but I never ended up reading it. Now it’s finally the time!

So far, I’ve only read two books from John Green (“The Fault In Our Stars” and “Paper Towns”) and I loved them both, so my expectations for this one are high.

Also, can we talk about the cover of the Portuguese edition? How beautiful!

Fractured, Teri Terry

Fractured, Teri Terry - June Reading List
“Fractured”

Goodreads Synopsis: Kyla shouldn’t be able to remember anything. But she can – and she’s beginning to realize that there are a lot of dark secrets locked away in her memories. When a mysterious man from her past comes back into her life, she thinks she’s on her way to finding the truth. But the more she learns about her history, the more confusing her future becomes.

Goodreads Rating: 4.15

“Fractured” is the second book of the Slated Series. The first book, “Slated”, was absolutely fantastic. Despite having read it a long time ago, I still remember most of the storyline, which is great.

Can’t wait to start reading this one, and getting ready for the third book of the series!

Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury

Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury - June Reading List
“Fahrenheit 451”

Goodreads Synopsis: Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden.

Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television ‘family’. But then he meets an eccentric young neighbor, Clarisse, who introduces him to a past where people did not live in fear and to a present where one sees the world through the ideas in books instead of the mindless chatter of television.

When Mildred attempts suicide and Clarisse suddenly disappears, Montag begins to question everything he has ever known

Goodreads Rating: 3.99

The synopsis is enough for me to fall in love with this book immediately. I honestly have no idea how I haven’t read it yet.

I’ve heard so many good reviews on this one, so I’m hoping it will be more than just a dystopian fiction. I’m so excited!!!

Circe, Madeline Miller

Circe, Madeline Miller - June Reading List
“Circe”

Goodreads Synopsis: In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child—not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus. (…more)

Goodreads Rating: 4.27

“Circe” was in my May TBR, but, unfortunately, I had no time to read it. So this book will definitely be a priority for this month.

The synopsis is simply BREATHTAKING. I’m a huge fan of mythology, so this book couldn’t be more interesting!

Have you ever read this book? If so, what are your thoughts on it?

Can’t wait!

Hard Times, Charles Dickens

Hard Times, Charles Dickens - June Reading List
“Hard Times”

Goodreads Synopsis: Published in 1854, the story concerns one Thomas Gradgrind, a “fanatic of the demonstrable fact,” who raises his children, Tom and Louisa, in a stifling and arid atmosphere of grim practicality.

Without a moral compass to guide them, the children sink into lives of desperation and despair, played out against the grim background of Coketown, a wretched community shadowed by an industrial behemoth. Louisa falls into a loveless marriage with Josiah Bouderby, a vulgar banker, while the unscrupulous Tom, totally lacking in principle, becomes a thief who frames an innocent man for his crime. Witnessing the degradation and downfall of his children, Gradgrind realizes that his own misguided principles have ruined their lives. (…more)

Goodreads Rating: 3.53

So here’s my classic for the month. In fact, this was my classic for May, but I had no time to read it. So here it goes.

I’m already on page 42, and so far I’m enjoying it. It’s important for me to read this book right now since I’ll be analyzing it in the next year of university.

Wish me luck!

A Estrela, Vergílio Ferreira

A Estrela, Vergílio Ferreira - June Reading List
“A Estrela”

Here is my Portuguese book for the month!

“A Estrela” (in English, “The Star”) is a short story, written by one of the greatest writers of my country.

My godmother has been a big influence on my appreciation of Vergílio Ferreira’s writing. This will be the second book I’ll read from him, so I’m hoping it will be as good as the first (“Contos”, a compilation of short stories).

Can’t wait!

  2. I read Fahrenheit 451 in high school, but it’s been so long I hardly remember much about it 😀 Circe is still on my list too!! So far this month I’ve read Little Weirds by Jenny Slate, which was one of the trippiest books I’ve read in a while, but still poetically beautiful in its descriptions. Right now I’m reading The Visionist, which is about a girl that escapes an abusive father and takes shelter in a Shaker community in the 1800s. Haven’t made it too far in yet, so we’ll see how it goes 😛 I’ll be looking forward to hearing your thoughts on these books!
