It’s time for my first book review here on the blog. I’m so excited!

The Long

Everything about “Circe” was magical.

I’m a huge fan of Greek mythology so when I noticed this was a retelling I became immediately curious about it. The synopsis was absolutely amazing and I couldn’t resist.

What most surprised me was the writing. Madeline Miller writes in such a way that totally immerses you in the storyline. It is absolutely beautiful. As a non-native speaker who read this book in its original language, some words were unknown to me, but overall I managed to understand everything.

Circe’s character is what brings the story together. Even though she’s a goddess, her flaws and weaknesses make her somewhat relatable. This is a woman who has been bullied all her life, the lack of affection and love force her to do anything to become accepted.

Her naiveness and compassion are often battling with the anger and pain she hides inside. Throughout the story, Circe becomes stronger, especially when she starts understanding how to use her witchcraft powers.

I would say “Circe” is ultimately the story of a woman, a story where pain, love, motherhood, heartache and anger coexist.

Finally, I was a little bit dissapointed with the end of the story, but still enjoyed it 🙂
